This story was written by Linnie Dudley in 1920. It must have been a school project. It is typed exactly as she wrote it.

“CUMBERLAND”
BY Linney Henry (Dudley)
C.H.S. 1920

Cumberland a little town of “quaint origin” is situated in the southwestern part of Guernsey County. Surrounded by hills and some woods. This place originated in a rather strange way. Some surveyors passing through the country on their way to prepare to build up the town were invited to “keep company” with a barrel of whiskey and owing to its effects were unable to travel farther and so started their work in this place. The place planned for the town being about a mile from town on what is known as the John Young farm.

Their work was done in 1828. The first log cabin being where Mr. C. E. Knowles residence now is. (1852) The first hotel where the Presbyterian church now stands and the first church on the present Jordan property on Main St. For some time there was no school house but school was held in rented rooms. The next school house was built where the Fred Lyon’s property is. And in 1883 the present school building was built. The town was without railroads until 1853 where the O. R. and W. line was constructed and another line the B. and O. in 1874. These changes making the town very proud.

Also the Masonic lodge came about in 1846. The Odd Fellows in 1852 and another in 1886. Some of the older buildings still remain. One of which is know as the Emma Johnson property on this side of the Presbyterian Church. Another, the Lee Delong home on up the street farther. Also the Globe hotel, are old building still remains.

Many improvements have been made during these ninety two years in which the town has existed. And at present these are some of the things to be found in Cumberland. There are about ten different streets which are very irregular and the main street is the only paved road present.

Among the fine residences Cumberland now consists of three grocery stores, drug store, two clothing stores, two meat markets, a milliner store, two restaurants, hardware store, two banks, a post office, jewelry store, two tire shops, two garages, two or three creameries, harness shop, three churches, two livery stables, schoolhouse, two blacksmith shops, telephone exchange, and has its own electric lighting system. And a population of near seven-hundred. If you are not acquainted with our little town we advise to become such. After all were rather proud or “our town”. How about you?

Note: Other improvements up until 1922. Paving and improving of other necessary streets. Town become an incorporated village_________. Planing mill-lumbering, furniture store. Oil-Standard station, a fine ball diamond SQ of town, flouring mill, fire engine - organized fire department. Cumberland Ladies Aid was organized in 1922

- Linney must have added this note at a later time.
